Initial Planning Meeting
The initial planning meeting usually takes about one hour and provides an opportunity for you to sit with a therapist and discuss your child’s needs across a range of areas. The therapist will detail the types of therapy provided by The Complete Advantage as well as other complementary providers and services. The initial planning meeting is particularly useful for families whose children have had previous intervention, whose needs are complex, across a range of areas or for families who are receiving therapy services from a number of providers. At the end of the initial planning meeting your therapist will write a brief plan based on the discussions. An assessment for your child is often the next step.
Assessment
Where children’s needs fall clearly into one therapy area or where caregivers are seeking a straightforward service, the initial planning meeting may be skipped and an assessment booked as your initial appointment. During the assessment the therapist will talk with you regarding your priorities for your child and they will play, talk and engage your child to determine their skills in one or more specific areas. Caregivers are encouraged to sit in on assessment sessions and to provide as much detail as possible in regards to their child’s developmental history, behaviour and skills.
The assessment times vary depending on the type of assessment and the age of your child. Assessments can take place at The Complete Advantage Clinic, at your home or your child’s school or sometimes a combination of locations. Sometimes an assessment may be split into two visits to ensure your child is given the best opportunity to focus on the assessment materials.
